CHICHESTER DISTRICT COMMUNITY WARDENS’ ‘OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT’

Chichester District Community Wardens have won industry plaudits in a ceremony recognising the achievements of Wardens from across the region, for a second time.

The acknowledgement came at Neighbourhood Training and Resource Centre’s South East conference in Oxford. This highlights five major categories of work for the estimated 50 schemes, and 500 Wardens, in an area from Bedfordshire to Kent, Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

Chichester District Community Wardens’ scheme was one of only two from the region to receive an award in more than one category.  Shortlisted for two of the awards, the Wardens were Highly Commended for both Outstanding Achievement and Working with Vulnerable People.

The Outstanding Achievement award was given for work and results achieved during the establishment and running of Bracklesham and East Wittering Patrol, which saw high levels of resident satisfaction, and reducions in reported crime and anti-social behaviour. The Vulnerable People award highlighted the Wardens’ involvement in the 'CRESS' scheme, which works to help and support older people in rest homes in Chichester and Selsey, and aids them in recycling materials for the benefit of a local hospice.

Tim Mason, Head of the South East Neighbourhood Training and Resorce Centre, said “These are the major awards for Community Wardens in the region, and so to be recognised in two of the categories is a substantial achievement. This reflects Chichester’s position in the South East as a scheme that continues to demonstrate excellence and good practice”.

Councillor Derek James, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety at Chichester District Council, said, “I understand that we have since been approached by a number of other schemes for help and advice on how to improve and develop this good practice across the region. My congratulations go to the Wardens, and all involved with the schemes locally, in maintaining such high standards.”
